This is Robbie we spent Good Friday together at a dear friends. He was the lighting director at the Royal Court Theatre in the 1970s and 1980s and knew Countess Esther Benckendorff my beloved neighbour who I visited daily and danced with until her sudden departure when she was 56 and I was 12. She encouraged me to dance, create, flirt and appreciate every moment. She played reggae music and welcomed reggae musicians over to drum and play. She especially loved Bob Marley who, it turned out, was living nearby in Oakley St and was playing football in our local Battersea park (if only we knew we could have popped there like fan girls). I think she must have known and chose to let him be. I loved her so much and missed her dreadfully when she seemed to suddenly go (I now know more about what happened and how she died but as a child I didn’t know or understand). She was so beautiful and flirted wherever she went. In her yellow flipflops and crocheted dresses she walked like a queen and responded with such Grace. Sometimes when someone dies there can be less and less people to chat about their significance and influence so meeting Robbie was like reviving my heart and opening me up again. Xx
